Pollen On The Attack - Tips on how to survive the hay fever season

Brace yourself, hay fever sufferers!

A pollen onslaught is gripping the UK, promising itchy eyes, runny noses, and all the joys of allergy season. Forecasts even hint at a heatwave next week, which might feel more like a personal sauna for those struggling with allergies.

The Met Office warns of very high pollen counts across England for the next five days, spreading to Wales and Northern Ireland by Saturday. By Monday, even the usually pollen-free havens of northern Scotland will feel the sting.

Taking Care Of Your Lungs

If you have asthma or other respiratory conditions, Asthma + Lung UK urges extra caution this week. Their research shows that nearly half (47%) of asthmatics and a quarter (27%) of people with COPD experience worsened symptoms due to pollen. This can trigger coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath.

"Inhaling pollen particles inflames the airways and reaches the lungs, making breathing difficult for those with lung conditions," explains Erika Radford, head of health advice for Asthma + Lung UK. "It can be a scary experience."

Here's how to shield your lungs:

  • Medication is Key: Asthmatics, remember to use your preventer inhaler daily as prescribed. Always keep your reliever inhaler close by, even indoors.

  • Combat  hay fever with Antihistamines: Over-the-counter antihistamines can significantly reduce hayfever symptoms.

  • For additional relief, consult your GP about a prescription steroid nasal spray.

On high pollen count days, try to limit outdoor time, especially during mornings and evenings when pollen concentrations are at their peak.
